RALPH WALDO EMERSON (HAMATREYA, 1845)
Botanical illustrations handmade in silk, dyed and painted with botanical pigments and inks.
Each specimen is completely handcrafted and, therefore, unique. The process comprises several defining steps that start with making a botanical study of a real specimen, taking it apart to observe and make a pattern of each of its elements. Then, dyeing the silk fabrics and thread that are going to be used. Cutting and shaping each of the composing elements (petals, leaves, sepals…) and assembling them.
The dyes and inks I use for giving color to these flowers are handmade from natural dye stuff. Mainly botanical (rhubarb, teak, sandal, madder, logwood, indigo), but also mineral (copper, iron, different soils) and animal (cochineal and lac insects).
Flowers can be left on their own, presented on wooden bases, arranged into antique hand-blown glass domes or secured onto a sterling silver pin to be worn as a brooch.
Each flower and flower arrangement is made to order and to measure. Specifications and price upon request.
