“Kalathos” were woven crowns, generally made in vegetable fibers with an exvased cylindrical shape, widely used within the Ancient Greek world around the 5th century. However, crowns like these have been found being worn by terracotta figurines of Minoan goddesses dating back to c.a. 1400B.C. Despite the fact that similar crowns were also worn by kings and warriors (in the Persian and Median world), these “little baskets” were usually associated with female deities symbolizing protection and abundance.
